Youth Discovered Dead Following Untrue Accusations of Stealing Cremated Remains
A 14-year-old youth was discovered deceased just days after being falsely blamed of taking the cremated remains of a deceased baby during a burglary, an inquest has learned.
Tragic Finding
Kai Lloyd's mother and father discovered his body in his bedroom at his Flintshire residence on November 19th, 2021.
False Accusations Start
The investigation learned how his parent received a message on 8 November 2021 via social media, from a woman asking if Kai was her offspring. The message added: "Inform him appreciation for burgling my flat."
In a statement read to the court, the mother said the woman had been in the news, claiming her baby's ashes had been stolen in a burglary - a claim which was false.
Police Inquiry
An official inquiry from authorities later determined the alleged break-in complainant had "lied to police" and "evidence shows that the property was not stolen in the beginning".
News coverage about the alleged taken remains generated online comments, and although Kai was not identified in the posts, his mother said individuals "knew it was him".
The "online posts were really distressing", she stated.
Mental Health Impact
She added that her son had been diagnosed with moderate ADHD, and as part of that disorder, other peoples' opinions really were important to him.
"This must have hurt him deeply," she commented, "particularly when this was untrue".
The teenager was detained at his residence, but nothing was found. He was taken to a police station and later released under investigation.
Police said they would be in contact, the hearing heard, but had failed to contacted the family by the time of his passing.
Withdrawal and Worry
His parent said Kai "became isolated" after the detention and "would keep asking me whether I had received anything from the authorities", because his ADHD meant sometimes "a minute could seem like days".
When she spoke to him about the supposed burglary, she said her son informed her he had entered the residence because the resident who resided there had said he could utilize the toilet whenever he needed, but refuted removing anything.
Digital Bullying
In a joint statement between her and her husband, the mother said her child was being bullied online after the allegations.
The inquest learned that one 19-year-old urged the teenager to kill himself.
She had no concerns on the evening before he died, describing how she had listened to him "laughing and joking".
She described him as a "caring, loving" boy, and said her "family is totally devastated".
He had been "clearly hiding his concerns", she said, noting that he could not stand to have anybody "think bad of him".
Educational Reaction
The inquest received testimony from educational personnel at the local secondary school.
On November 8th, she "heard some students talking that the student had been detained and that was the initial I heard".
"He informed me... he'd done nothing wrong," she continued.
After the conversation, the educator said she called the family's parents' landline and provided a voicemail saying she had spoken to the student about the accusations.
The proceedings heard his family said they did not got that message.
Formal Finding
Lead investigator informed the inquest he would await documents regarding what improvements had been made to handling individuals with ADHD, before determining whether he should make a avoidance of future deaths report.
Providing a narrative finding, he said: "Around 8 November 2021, unsupported allegations were made against the teenager, a young child.
"Probably falsehoods were afterwards embellished and exaggerated through the platform of online networks.
"On November 11th, he was interviewed by the authorities and following his questioning he was freed whilst inquiries continued."
The official concluded: "There is no proof that the actions or failures of any agency caused or contributed to his death and although it was the outcome of a self-inflicted act it is impossible to discern his purpose."
